ICF Congress 19 to 23 October 2005 in Tokyo
This year’s Congress will be held at the Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Chinzan-So located in an exclusive residential neighborhood, on the perimeter of Tokyo’s main business districts and a perfect retreat within this busy city. Invitations have been sent to all members and we would like to ask you to support our work by registering before 23 July 2005.
The topics presented at this year’s Congress are:
• China’s Role in the Global Cable Industry (to set the scene this newsletter covers trends & developments of China’s Wire & Cable Trend)
• Dynamics of the OEM Markets
• Telecommunications Developments
• Residential Intelligence
• Industry Outlook Round Table with distinguished members of the Council of ICF
Renate is busily working on the social parts of the Congress which we will inform you about as soon as all arrangements have been finalized.
Thanks to the excellent and dedicated work of the members of the ICF Standing Commission chaired by Arien van Beinum, high-level speakers have already been engaged for all Business Sessions.
Key to a successful Congress is of course your attendance itself and the Secretariat would like to encourage all members to support the Tokyo event by sending their most senior management to this unique and international forum which ICF offers with its Annual Congress.
Global Development Alliance
The International Copper Association (ICA) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) created a Global Development Alliance called “Sustainable and Efficient Energy Use in the Developing World.” Because an estimated one billion people live in informal settlements and slum areas and the numbers are growing 5% per year, one proposed project is to bring or improve slum electrification. Studies have shown that distribution systems and building wiring within informal urban areas, if they exist at all, are often illegal, unsafe, of poor power quality and energy inefficient. USAID investigated a few slums and identified innovative approaches for expanding access to legal and safe electricity services. The program will design codes, install correctly sized cables, transformers, home wiring and connections in pilot locations, and demonstrate the benefits to inhabitants and other stakeholders and financing institutions that are expected to assist with wide-spread upgrading of wiring, creating a substantial demand, ICA believes that a great opportunity exists and invites the ICF members to join as partners, by donating expertise, wire and cable. John Mollet of ICA hopes to be able to meet with interested cable makers during the Congress in Tokyo.
